What should i use in place of bioballs. I have a sump that hos no media/rubber balls in it. Also should I add a sponge to the sump? This sump was used for saltwater, so I need to figure things out for a fresh water setup.

pot scrubbies! theyre your best friend! do a search and youll see :)

pot scrubbies. bio glass. plastic shavings. cinder. perlite. sand. gravel. i assume that you want to replace bioballs cause they're expensive, if its wetdry i like perlite or cinder for cost effectiveness. perlite is used in planting to help airerate the soil, it like 4 bucks for 8 quarts, and cinder is free at the closest cinder pit. just rinse both thouroughly and monitor for ph swings. if its not wet dry then gravel or something thats easy to stir up. hope that helps.

Do you think pot scrubbies would be cheape than buying bioballs? i can get 1 gallon used bioballs here for 8 bucks or so i think.

I just got back from the aquarium store. I bought a 5 gallon bucket of bioballs for 20 bucks. That should do the trick.

That is a great deal. There is no way I could find them for that price.
