I have a Sunpod 70w HQI MH for my 14 g biocube. What kind of corals and SPS can I keep under that light? It sucks that I cant put a 150w light in my sunpod. I called the company up and they said id burn up the ballast. I am new to keeping reef tanks and have been doin alot of research. I just couldnt find any info on this subject. I will be using RO/DI water and running a protein skimmer with about 10-12 pounds of LR.

any type of coral you want to keep.... why would you want a 150 halide on a 14 gallon anyway you would cook any corals from the heat....

Ive done alot of research of people with Biocubes would recommend the 150W anyday over the 70W. I think it would cook the fish or burn the corals too.

As long as your water temp stays very stable, go for the higher light output. I grew a large plate colony to the size of a dinner plate from a 1cm frag in a year with a 400 watt MH 6 inches above it. Now that was in my 600 gallon tank but we are talking about light intensity here and water temps. Total water volume would be irrelivent as long as the parameters are the same in the end.

Compared to the sun, nothing in the home can come close to reproducing it. Take your MH bulb outside at noon and turn it on and look at the ground under it.

Ive read up on how many watts per gallon I need for SPS. It was recommended 7-10 watts per gallon. I have a 14 gallon tank. They say 70w is not enough. 14x5=70. See my point? Not enough to be 7 -10 watts. So I need at least a 100w bulb. I wish I had bought a higher output from Sunpod. Am I right or does someone else have a 70w MH HQI and have SPS? Thanks for any advice or comments.

I have a 70 w halide and 2 t5's on my 12 gall but i also have a sump and skimmer and a chiller for it to keep everything cool check out nano-reef.com for more diy for these kinds of tanks.I have lps and sps in my cube with no prob..

you will be able to grow any coral you want in that 14 gallon with that 70watt bulb.... its not really watts per gallon it more about the lumens... this is why T-5 HO and halides are the best they put out the most lumens.... go for some plate frags acro frags what ever you want after the tank is cycled

Under my light would I keep the plate fragsor the acro frags on the very top closest to the light? Not very much info on the net about what types of corals would I be able to keep without starving them without enough light. I was thinking about maybe some mushrooms and some button polyps. I want to get some Acropora frags. I love soft corals. But no one uses a 70 Watt MH HQi for that. 150w or more.
