has anyone heard about using septic tank starter ( ala home depot) to start a freshwater biofilter ???..........rumored to be good but I havent talked to anybody who has tried it !!!!

any info welcome thanks !!!!

Hmmm sounds promising. I will be in home depot this week, I will check it out.

Too caustic for lack of a better term (tired).

This stuff is targeted at a different type of bacteria, septic tanks are prone to anerobic bacteria (slower) by design. to break down grease and first level food stuffs plus all the rest.

Where's our microbiologists when we need them?

Howdy,

I have personally never tried it. The only person who might have tried it is ChileRelleno. In an older THREAD, ChileRelleno stated about his extensive experience with preparations of cycling bacteria

ChileRelleno;615256; said:
As a matter of fact, I have tried most of the brands [of bacterial starters] commonly available in the US as a result of ignorance, for cycling purposes/tank maintenance and etc.
[...]
I speak from my experience and the accumulated experience/opinion of 100's of knowledgeable/experienced fish-keepers.

I unsuccessfully tried to persuade him by PM to post his experiences, but maybe he will give in to popular demand?!

I've used it for several prototypes, if you don't know what your doing it will be time to clean the tank and buy some live fish.

Would love to hear ChileRelleno experiences, it took forever to reseach this before.

I think Chile spends most of his forum time over at OscarFish. I believe he's a mod over there. That certainly is a novel idea, I would like to learn more about this myself.
