Been trying to add more biological filtration to my 90 gal however a sump system is not financially an option for me at this time and I feel the need to tinker with my setup. Was thinking of placing a tray perhaps 10-12" wide 3-4" high and 3.5' long on top of the tank at a slightly descending angle. In this tray will be scrubbies pourous rocks or another biological media. Water will be pulled from the tank via a 170gph powerhead where it will then course through tray then out a spout at the end back into the tank. Just wondering if this could work and if it does would it be worth my time to make it. Also If I just used the powerhead to run a sump would that work or would it be too much head for the little pump?

Sponge filters are the most economical and effective. The powerhead would not have enough power to run a sump.

What you discribed would give you some benifit.

Well, it would provide some benefit assuming you have reached the maximum surface area for bacteria to colonize.

I am currently running a sponge filter and a rena filstar 404. I made a tray out of the bottom of a rubbermaid tub and sat it ontop of the tank, placed the spray bar coming from my rena canister into said box filled box tray with scrubbers sponges and 1 -2" lengths of 1" pvc pipe. Water flows through a hole out the bottom and back into the tank. Is this setup beneficial? I know its just extra on top of my current filtration but I like to over do it. At the very least I think it should increase my water to air surface area. I dont think there should be any harm in this set up. What do you all think keep it or junk it not sure how I feel about it yet.

Hey, if it adds more bio media and you like it, then keep it. I'm not sure which filter your talking about. A Rena Xp4 or Fluval 404. They're different filters but either one should be sufficient on a 90, especially the Xp4. Personally, I wouldn't do it because I like a very clean tank. Ever though of Eheim substrate pro? It's very expensive but looks nice. THat and a powerhead for more flow would be great. Although, that depends on your budget.

^ this.

If you have no ammonia/nitrites in your tank, then additional surface area isn't gonna help, as the bacteria is already established according to your bio load. Adding more media won't mean more bacteria. But, if your bioload increases and you don't have enough exisisting media, then it will help.

Sorry about that its actually the xp4 confused it with the fluval 404 used to have a 404. I like a clean tank too its actually pretty subtle cant see it behind the light hood. However if there is no real benefit to having it I think I will take it off as I can see it being a possible pain in the *** come WC time.
