I would like advice on setting up a refugium / filtraion setup for a large tank. Use of macro algae etc in removing detritus / nitrate reduction etc. Au Naturel etc. This will be for a prospective 1000 gallon marine tank. I currently have a niger trigger, Emperror snapper and a panther grouper. I am new to salt water but have experience with large fresh water.

sorry no digital images currently available....will add to profile on here real soon...his current tank is a 90 ..his current size is 7" + and growing fast.

I set up my refugium 4 months ago it is low tech filter that has breathed new life into my reef tank. Made it my self as for a 1000 gallon tank stocked with fish that is a big bio-load I would not use it as a stand alone filter.
You can build your Refugium out of a laundry basket or an old tank--don't matter
I use a 200 micron sock as a pre filter (rinse out every two weeks) fabricate baffles (just like a "wet dry sump" I run a 55 watt PC over the refugium 24/7 as the water slowly flows the macro algae absorbs excess nutrient that in turn limits your excess waste.
When my refuguim grows to thick I simply reach in and grab a handful of "sea-weed" and feed my yellow tang he loves the fresh food and I love the fact that it's free!

Like H20Boy said, no bio balls, just lots of live rock and light for the marine algea to grow.
