when setting up a pond (1000)gallons for koi do I need to add, water conditioners and cycle (bacteria) like you do for an aquarium? this isnt mine, i'm helping a friend set up his pond with a submersible filter and uv filtration cuz the lady that built it for him only set him up with a water circulation pump which feeds hil waterfall. I think originally he didnt plan on putting fish in it but wants to now. I will be doing it this weekend so please give me some info.

Does the pond have water or brand new?

If adding new water, absolutly add stress coat or chlorine remover. Adding cycle will only help too. I would start w/some feeders for a couple of weeks before adding any Koi. The Koi have a bigger bio-mass and creat a lot more waste. By using the goldfish, it will give the pond a chance to build up the BB before the Koi are introduced. I treat my pond like my fish tanks....

Add chlorine remover each time I add new water, QT all fish, don't over feed, and do reg. maintenace.

we drained it in order to add the new pump and filters so I guess you can call it brand new. but I guess the answer is yes it will need water conditioner each time he adds water and setting it up will require a bacteria like cycle just like a new tank. Thanks wasnt sure because I saw a thread state about not needing filtration at all.

Ponds with no filtration still have filtration in the form of plants. Does your buddy have a fish tank in the house, or any other buddies have a pond? Take some gravel from each to add BB to the new pond. Fishless cycle will take longer to establish BB.
