How effective would this be at keeping ammonia and nitrates from reaching toxic levels?

I am going to be moving 5 arowanas 13-15" and a juruense about 13".I will be moving them about 2.5 hours.

I am going to use a rubbermaid-like container...I think it holds about 30 gallons or but will not be filled all the way so I assume 20 gallons of water tops..that might even be a bit much considering that will weigh about 200 lbs.

There will be vary few if any fish left in the tank, and as such I was planning on putting a bunch of the pot scrubbies from my sump into the water with the fish being moved.

will this potentially be able to keep ammonia and nitrate levels safe for a few hours? How many potscrubbies should I put in?As mentioned there will be possibly no fish left in the tank so I can put allot in if I need to.

I was thinking of putting them in a large mesh bag and weighing that down to the bottom of the container with rocks.....

It sounds like you have a good plan. Get a battery air pump for each of the moving containers (don't stuff all of the fish into just one). Petsmart sells a large round airstone that doesn't need weighting down for 69 cents.

In terms of how much bio-media, divide it equally among the fish.
