I want to set up a biotope with an ornate bichir as my center piece, what are some fish that could live with my 6.5 inch bichir in a 75 gallon? I will eventually upgrade in a while but right now what could live for at least 6 months in a 75 gallon with the bichir.

Well I'm not sure what type of biotope you wan't to set up (biotope refers to the same environmental conditions, all my fish can handle the same conditions). Although they don't all come from Africa my current setup has a look and feel of fish that colour and look go together and has a biotope that functions well. This completely depends on the temperment of your ornate however. Mine is extremely docile and a wuss (thankfully) so don't attack others. If you have a more aggressive ornate then I would not recommend this at all.

I have an african knife, 3 rockiel severums, 2 geos, and an ornate (as well as 2 endli's and a rope). Put on black substrate keeps everyone darker toned and fairly vibrant (except the shimmering geo's which give a nice change in color within the tank). Just remember all these guys get really big (except the knife which may need to stay in the 75gal) so after a year or so (depending on size when you get them, possibly much sooner) you'll have to upgrade to ~180-250gal.

This combo works for me and my particular fish and give a nice colour as well as makes feeding time easy since they can all eat the same foods (if I switch to beef heart/shrimp the bichir eat it and the others leave it alone so no issues in my tank with more specialized foods). Just my 1 1/2 cent.

I agree with sd, but the tetra's won't last long. Ornate will probably finish them off as soon as he's big enough to eat one... or try to eat one. There are a bunch of threads on this part of the forum about this topic that may have other ideas. Ornate's usually get aggressive and large so it cuts out a lot of options. Maybe some type of cichlid that isn't too aggressive yet can defend itself?
