as most know i had 5 pulchra in a tank set up for breeding and one of what looked to be a pair got beat up and then committed hari kari by jumping. it died the next day and although was only out the water for a few minutes its beating and jumping took its toll.
so to date i still have 5 as i bought another and have 2 around 9'' and 2 6-7'' and 1 around 7''.

the 2 larger are always out hanging around at the front of the tank the other 3 are usually never to be seen apart from when i add food. so it seems i have another pair yet they don't seem to hang around together just sorta in the same vicinity sometimes 1' apart. both chase the other 3 away more so the slightly larger of the 2.

well today i fed them and all 3 of the smaller fish have damage. the 2 smaller have tail bites which are not too bad but the middle sized has had a real beating so much so its missing most of its tail.

i have not seen any real breeding signs at all between the 2 larger fish yet everything else seems to lead to having a pair, they both are in perfect condition and seem to get on well with no malice toward each other its just they don't seem to be that close.

i am baffled so need info from pulchra breeders is this normal behavior.

When i had first got my channa ornatipinnis i had three, they all went into the tank, at first they all used to chase each other round if they spyed each other, then after a while the two now pair would gang up on the other, So i removed it, then a few day's after i removed it all was calm then suddenly eggs.....If your aiming at breeding i would suggest removing all the other's and leaving the "pair" and hopefully that will entise them into breeding...

yeah ive put the others up for sale now and we'll see. its the only next step that i can think of but hopefully they are a pair otherwise i will sell the lot and start again.

hi mate , it does indeed sound like they are pairing up , when they paired up for me i saw the same signs , two perfect and all others showing signs of damage , personally i like to persevere until i see at least a mock spawning , but if things continue with two being perfect and all others still getting badly beaten then remove the beaten ones.

useally when the aggresion rate vastly increases as you are reporting then spawning is not far off , they will spawn with the other in the tank but once spawned they simply will not allow the other fish out of hiding, sounds like you are very close mate , you could do a small water change it would either set them off or settle them back down , or just wait it out a bit more .

useally they start mock spawning on an evening , but i have also seen it during the day time also , so maybe they could be mock spawning while you are out at work ect .

keep us updated

cheers col

Agreed with colin, mine would mock spawn around 10-11pm alway's but iam out all day so miss any day time activity, Yours have all the triats that mine did before they spawned, all i did was remove the third, no waterchange's with mine

Hi ,
if they are setting about their tank mates its time to move them(the damaged ones)as they will kill them eventually.

Do you have a lot of floating cover you may already have eggs?

Both of my broods were left to float at the surface, the first time in the back corner of the tank where they couldn't be seen by me, this is when the aggro levels went off the scale.

All Spawning mock or otherwise took place overnight. They still like to "Dance" together late in the enenings (midnightish).

:)

thanks for the info everyone it is what i though.
the other 2 are up for sale and 3rd will not make it so will put it out of its misery tonight.

darn it that's a shame, how bad is it, my ornate's were badly beaten when i first got them, they healed up nice......good luck anyhow mate, look forward to progress report's....iam a snakehead lover now<been converted
