ever since about 2 years ago when i first accidentally dived into keeping ]v[onsters, ive thought about keeping a payara in my mix. unfortunately i only ever saw one batch for sale in my area, and by the time i decided to act they were all sold (like $70 i think for a 3"er). so i kinda forgot about them and then they got brought up during a dinner conversation with one of my buddies that was asking why i didnt have one. i told him that i hadnt seen them FOREVER and that there was talk of them not growing past 12"s.

then monday, about 3 weeks later, my LFS got a 7"er traded in and they wanted $50 for it. i talked them down to $40 and they bagged it.

now if i remember correctly theres 5 species in captivity correct?

1. Scombs
2. Tats
3. Armatus
4. Vulpinnins
5. that ugly dark grey one with the funny jaw....(btw if anyone has one or 3 they want to sell zip me a PM)

so back when i got out of it i had come to the conclusion that Scombs were the only ones that didnt do well, and the ugly grey ones didnt get that big neways (like 8"s).

so whats the new census, same thing? anybody have big tats? since thats the one i have now.

how fast do they grow. like how long till a 7"er hits like 11? and have we nixed the fast current myth?

basically just lookin for an update on the collective knowledge out there

where did u get an ID on the fish from? ( i would post pics )as far as i know current isnt a must. if it is a tat, they grow very very slow. their are only a few pics that ive seen of big tats. they do well in a comm tank though.

cool, any more q's let me know. the upside to tats is they usually do ok in a community. (unlike Armatus)

so are we talking about vampire fish?
