I know this has probably been asked 1000 times, but I've done some searching and havent gotten a clear answer. I have been keeping fish for along time and within the last 5 years I've really been into SA/CA cichlids. I have this dream tank in mind and will be starting the build in a year or so. I am currently growing out some festae, manguense, texas, and GT for the new 350+ gallon tank I will be building.

I have fallen in love with the Black Aros and was wondering if I could keep all these fish together without problems. I understand size of fish will be key here, but could it be done? And if so who has had success keeping Aros with big semi aggressive/aggressive cichlids?

Smaller arowana can be easily overcome by SA/CA equal their length. Best to keep separate until the arowana is about 10-11" long and 2x the length of the cichlid.

It is not a difficult combo to keep, but things can always change. I kept a 12" argentea with my arowana for a couple years without issue. Then suddenly it started chasing and harrassing the arowana, so the argentea had to be removed.

yeah, I keep festae, argentea, and nicaraguans with my large silver and green aro. the aros don't even care that the cichlids are there and vice versa. but I know at any time things could change. I wouldn't risk it with smaller aros like bderick said.

Well not knowing what size "growout" tanks you currently have. You could find a 10" black aro now, but it would need be in a 48" long, 75 tank at least and would need moved to a larger tank within 3-6 months. Or wait until this spring and get a baby black aro and grow it out. How soon will you have the 350g tank ready?
