My 12 inch black absolutely loves Hikari Food Sticks. He eats like a champ twice a day and is very active. I have tried to give him thawed krill, squid, bloodworms etc.. and he does not pay any attention to them. I have even starved him and until I bring the Hikari back he will not eat.

I hate to be feeding just one item however, I am happy it is not feeders! Should I be concerned? Or just love the fact that he is so low maintenence?

No. Do not be concerned. You have an aro loving pellets, keep it at that. Tons of people suffer to achieve the state you're in. she can have pellets, for a very well balanced iet, for all her life, much more being pellets of a superior quality brand such as Hikari..

I have only ever kept a few Silver Aros (have one presently) and they seem to gravitate to a single food item they like for the bulk of their diet. When the fish was small I started it on freeze dried krill and that is about all it would eat. As it got bigger it tried a few new items (mostly with seeming disgust) but would eat a few of the sticks. The krill got too small after a while and then I tried strips of fish which took a long time for the fish to show any interest. Now it is basicly on market shrimp (3 per day), plus cubes of fish on occasion, the rare stick food, and if its hungry will still eat krill.

As a treat, you might want to try live crickets. Aros love insects, just don't get it eating them exclusively, you have a good thing going right now! One nice think about giving mine prepared food and not live is that it is the biggest fish in a community tank with cichlids, silver dollers and a red hook and (so far) has not eaten any of its tankmates, and some are bite size. It will not hesitate to take a shrimp away from anything that tries to steal one!

My black aro eats hikari food sticks also - but loves market shrimp. My aro takes cichlid pellets as well. Maybe you can try a few pellets mixed in which the food sticks - since they float and can provide some variety - if any. :)

with our Pinky (silver arowana) crickets are a favorite treat. The problem with giving her crickets is that she won't eat anyting else for 2 or 3 days afterwards. Not even krill or shrimp (her other favorite foods), but at least when she eats krill and shrimp she will also eat raw tuna and cubed raw turkey hearts.

i wish my silver ate pellets, my jar seems to chew them up then spit it out or filter it through his gills.. you are lucky indeed.. they both started getting sick of krill, so now its bloodworms and crickets.. i gues my aros are getting the nutriton from the pellets because thats what i gut load the crickets with..
