After I did my morning feeding on a grow out tank, I went and checked on my 240. I noticed the water had an odor, so I planned on a water change after feeding the 240. I'm not sure how much time passed but when I went back to the grow out tank to turn off the filters, my black aro was on the carpet by the surge protector:WHOA: I quickly picked him up, he moved a little, and I put him in the tank. He started swimming around so I watched him for a bit. He had some carpet fibers on him, so I went ahead with the water change and used a good amount of stress coat. I think hes gonna make it.

Normally I do my routine with this tank and move on- I don't spend time in front of it stressing out the fish. They know when I come in it's feeding time:D
Today I was glued to it watching my aro....and I noticed what appears to be algae, except it's colorless? It doesn't move around so I don't think it's worms or parasites but it is all over the sides and the bare bottom of the tank. Kind of stumped as what it could be but I'm a little stressed from the aro hitting the floor and I gotta leave for work.

I checked a few water perams before the ~50% water change:

ammonia- 0
nitrates- 5-10

tank:
20g long with 1 xp3

stock:
4 x 3-4" Dats
1 x 5-6" Black aro

I feed twice a day, and do 25% water changes daily- messy eaters on a 20g long usually yields about a 5g bucket full of water vacc'ing it up. The dats are almost ready to go into the 240g.

This smelly water is throwing me off and I hope it's not why the aro tried to move away...

ps/

I have an egg crate covering the tank with food jars holding it down...there is a tiny gap where the return lines come back from the xp3 and as far as I can tell that's where he got out:(

Why are they not in the 240 now ?

He did just mention that it was a grow out tank. Also if you read it, it said he had to do a water change on the 240. Which leads me to believe two things. One it's still cycling or two it has larger fish inside. If my guesses are right, you wouldn't want to put the arowana in either of the situations.

My 240 has a 14"+ armatus in it that only eats feeders. They are in the grow out tank until they get a little more size on them. The Dats will be ready soon as they have more of a rounded shape and can go in at a smaller length. The aro will need to be around 10-12" before I will risk him in that tank. I have an established acrylic 100g waiting with no fish in it...I know what I'm doing :)

ps/

If you don't understand my reasoning on introducing the dats at a smaller size this is what I know about my armatus and his kill list:

-He has eaten hundreds of dollars worth of clown loaches ranging in sizes from 2"-7"....long skinny fish.

- He shoals and has been shoaling with 3 silver dollars , the smallest being around 4-5" when they were introduced.

- My armatus was grown out in my tanks as a very small juvi and is over 2 years old..."taller" more round fish survive and anything he can grab onto no matter the length will be eaten

Any comments on the smelly water?

More carbon! That usually helps the smell.

I have an entire tray of carbon in the xp3....guess I need to add more.

Aro is swimming around like it never happened. Seems to be 100% okay although I'm not sure he has eaten yet.

about the smell:

no chemical add-on other than dechlorinator in my aro tank, also in my flowerhorn tank now i think about it, not even carbon. it's just me. but i guess you know what you're doing... :)

have you checked/cleaned the xp3 recently? sufficient aeration? do you make sure there's no uneaten food left in the tank?

I found some uneaten krill stuck behind the xp3 plumbing....completely missed it the first time I guess....the odor is gone almost completely, just airing out the room now. Damn that stuff stinks, wonder how long it was there....
