my black aro hides in some floating plants most of the time, was eating fine yesterday but not showing too much interest on food today. (I feed mid size superworm cut to 2-3 pieces, it eats 2 superworms per feeding, I feed 1-2 times a day).
its in a 180g, the tank has been running since late July and I just did 50% water change Saturday (treated with prime in main tank), filter is wet/dry with 70g sump. the aro is7" maybe 8", tankmates are mollies, some tetras and 2 small anglefish.
show I be worried? should I remove those floating plants?

I wouldnt be worried yet but def keep a close eye on it.
What sized w/c's do you normally do, they are sometimes sensitive to changes in normal routine.
I assume your params are all up to par but I'd check them if you havnt recently.
Try removing the floating plants and see how it reacts and also try to get it on some hikari sticks.

imo i would keep the floating plants as i prefer a more natural setting - also not floating plants discourage aro's from jumping - we all know what a knock on the head can do to an aro.

if its not eating is it possible it may have eaten a mollie?

I normally do 25-30% waterchange, my test kits are out of date, need to get a new set. maybe it's just not hungry, idk.
it's not bothering with any of the tankmates, all the mollies are there and it doesn't even go after the much smaller tetras.
will see if it'll eat tonight, if not then just starve it for a day or two.
tried to get it on hikari food stick but it doesn't pay attention to it so I just gut load the superworms with pellets, carrots, mysis shrimp until I finish with all the worms I have first.

My 6" black is constantly swimming back and forth in the 180, but as soon as I get near the tank he stays in the corner. Mine is taking 4-5x hikari cichlid gold medium floating pellets daily.

Your post reads like he got spooked or maybe injured. I'd leave the floating plants. That's an awfully big tank for a small aro and the plants help him to feel a little more secure, especially if he was spooked or hurt. Does he look okay? Any split fins or missing scales?

Baby blacks are really skittish. My gets skittish whenever I come close to my tank. My black from 3"- 4" he would always hide in my floating plants and just lay motionless. I still have floating plants, but he doesn't use them anymore. I believe most baby fishes will hide in plants. Just leave the floating plants, won't do any harm.

i think it just hides from me, I sneaked into the basement tonight without turning on the room light and saw it was swimming around and when into hiding when I approached the tank. at what size will it become less skittish? the jardini I saw at lfs follows my finger for food even at smaller size than my black aro.

I don't think I would worry. There's no big change in behavior and it has only been one day without eating.
