I have a Black Aro he is about 13" long, Sunday he ate about 20 of the Hikari food sticks, which is about twice what he normally eats. Yesterday he at about 10 which is what he normally ate for the past few weeks (recent p/u) and today he tried eating a few, either spat them out or chewed them into little pieces.

Is this normal?

Should i be concerned?

Is there any internal parasites or other things that i should know about?

I'm pretty new when it comes to aros, so i dont know what meds are safe with them so if there is something wrong with him could you let me know what to treat with?

thanks for the answers :)

in my experience with silvers, they will go through a day or 2 of not eating at all. They would eat like crazy for 2-3 weeks, and then without warning they will stop eating for afew days. I would assume blacks would susceptable to this condition also.

they do fast give it time...i feed my 24" silver every 2 days it seems to eat readily on the 2nd day...if i try to feed inbetween it picks at the food and doesn't really eat...they should be given atleast one fasting day a week to clean the system...

ok i'll see i think its just that because he went after it but then wasnt interested all of a sudden, what else would be a good food for him besides the sticks? any ideas? He's still pretty timid so it can't be sinking lol

Yes some black aros can be very finicky eaters, especially if they are wild caught.

There is a good post on arowana foods in the "Arowana Info" sticky. It used to be it's own sticky but was combined with others so you'll have to do some digging.

Sweet thanks i'll be looking into that thread, i hope thats all it is... discus are so easy to identify diseases i dont really know with aros lol

He JUST ATE OUT OF MY HAND!!! lol i'm beyond amazing mind you i was so nervous i thought he'd bite my fingers but instead he just "tasted" them with his barbels and then took the food from between my fingers!! Now i'm even more pumped to feed my rays :D

it will get you if you continue to hand feed it...i know from exp.;) now when i go to give it food i have to through it in from a distance not to get splashed, like it is starving...yet if i give it food before 2 days it doesn't eat:screwy:...be careful with the rays as the can get you worse then your aro

My experience is if the Black Aros are in good conditions, they will eat like pig...same like the silver aros do.
