Hi' Guy's ,

I can get Black Arowana for £26 so about $40 for the americans, however theyre only around 3-4 inch. I am going to set a tank up for them that will have discus's in. How big will it before i have to take it out of the tank to stop it eating the discus? Discus will be around 4-5 inch in a 4x2x2 tank.

Whats the best food for the arowana at that size? would dried meal worm and dried shrimp work for their diet?

As i am travelling a fair few miles to get to the shop should i buy a few as presumably they'll be pretty sensitive at that size and sell what's still alive when they get too around 8-10inch?

Cheers Ben

i wouldnt buy more than one unless you are buying 5 or more or they will fight to the death at that size

it should also be fine with discus for life if its mixed with the m from such a small size

as far as i know you cant get freeze dryed meal worms so it will be live meal worms

as the size you stated start on frozen blood worm then move up to the small sized meal worms

growth will be about 1-2inch per month up to about 10-12inch then slow down a bit

keep the temp high 84-86 will also help to grow faster and your discus should be at 88-90 anyway so that shouldnt be a problem

I wouldn't put such a small aro with any other fish, particularly since they are fragile. Even more so with blacks (apparently). A 5-6 inch discus is a lot bigger than a 4-5 inch aro, and the aro may get bullied/harassed

Thanks for the response, for meal worms go to wilko's they do them in the bird food section:) My snakeheads love them and they float so thought they'd be good:)

Once my 4x2x2's emptied of it's current occupants ill get myself to Pier and get myself one :) Total steel at the price theyre at :)

Good point about the size differernce i was hoping to buy big discus so i'll see if i can get some slightly smaller discus.

So if you have at least 5 blacks, then you should be ok?

Well I have five blacks and one seems to pick on the rest of them...so it's 1 against 4... but none have died and it's been almost 2 weeks since we've had them...

No not true, number really means nothing. I got 5 baby blacks last spring and they fought, no matter what the setup. After losing one I separated into two pairs. One pair I was able to get to cohab together peacefully the other pair had to be kept separate. The pair that would cohab would not let either of the other two be kept in their tank as they would beat them at night.

Unless you have multiple tanks, in case you need to separate I would not recommend getting more then one.

The one I have left of the 5 is now 14-15" long so about 12" in 10 months.

fighting will happe4n in any aro comm but doesnt normally end in death in larger aros

with smaller aros losses are possible
it all depend on how carm you weant the tank

I would listen to what he says. Non-asian aro's are usually best kept 1 to a tank
