The last 2 days my black arowana has been coming down to bottom and mid level water during the night. I usually dump 1 or 2 massivore pellets for my ornate to eat over the night and not more than 30 minutes ago, I caught my black arowana chowing on one of the pellets. It had the pellet in it's mouth for a good while since it couldn't swallow. Once it got soft enough it gulped it down. So I threw another one for the ornate only for it to be eaten again by the arowana. The stomach on the arowana is bulging and it worries me. I had to literally put the pellet in front of the ornate so that the arowana can't grab it. It can't be that the arowana is still hungry...since it gets almost 8 pieces of food sticks all to itself. Can the arowana eat itself to death?

What size is he?

I have had a VERY expensive juvi eat itself to death before. There were some left over mesquito fish in the tank that had escaped my vision for months...I had no idea they were in the tank and when I did see them I thought it would be ok since they obviously werent being eaten. I kept feeding as normal and one day he was floating....ate the mesquito fish and his food. I shouldve taken them out :(

Small arowan are very fragile in my experience.

I possibly had one. 6-7" black ate so many pieces of market shrimp it could not swallow the last piece and just carried it around. I made the mistake of leaving it, next morning I woke up to a dead aro.

My silver eats from the bottom frequently. However
this conversation is just a little to racially charged for me.

yesterday ive seen my silver literally steal a piece of shrimp from my ck's mouth. just dove and grabbed it out of its mouth. he also steals the floating pellets that my gouramis eat too. my 7-8" arow only eats when its hungry tho.

You are lucky your aro feeds from below. My aro is so picky that if the plecoeven touches its hikari sticks, she will not eat them at all. I wish my Aro ate from the bottom, have shrimps, beef heart, and worms ready for her.

Good luck.

It's about 8 inches now, maybe 9. If this keeps up, I'll have to manually feed my ornate.

so you have NOT been manually feeding your fish? ;)

i'm sure you'd want to watch your blackie feed and wouldn't want to leave uneaten foods in the tank. fish will keep swallowing food until they absolutely can't. power feed your young aro's but not to death.
