I am considering the acquisition of a South American black arowana (Osteoglossum ferreirai) and developing the 220 gallon tank around him. Whether or not I do so depends heavily on how interesting I think compatible tankmates would be as I prefer multi-species tanks. I am something of a purist and am only willing to consider other South American species, preferably from the Rio Negro river basin (but not a deal breaker). I am doing my own research, but would appreciate any suggestions or experience that you guys would like to share. Thanks in advance for any help.

What about stingrays...they are local.

You can pretty much add any fish that is not too aggressive, and large enough that the aro won't eat him. I would avoid any nipply cichlids, but the Geophagus genus tends to mix well with them.

you will probably get more replies in the ancient fish section to sort your problem quicker.

Hmm, I would go with a nice lima cat, a black ghost knife, and some peaceful cichlids (group of uaru, geos, chocolate, severum). You could also have a group of big dollar types like red hooks.
