I am considering the acquisition of a South American black arowana (Osteoglossum ferreirai) and developing the 220 gallon tank around him. Whether or not I do so depends heavily on how interesting I think compatible tankmates would be (as I prefer multi-species tanks). I am something of a purist and am only willing to consider other South American species, preferably from the Rio Negro river basin (but not a deal breaker). I am doing my own research, but would appreciate any suggestions or experience that you guys would like to share. Thanks in advance for any help.

How about RTC, Tigrinus, Leporinus, Red Hooks, Pike Cichlids, P.Bass, Fei Feng, Chalceus or Oscars?

If you want to keep it south American stay away from rtc tsn and get a tig also no aggressive cichlids or fin nippers .I have a 25'' black i keep it with dats silver dollars as dither fish large clown loaches exotic plecos, i was a purest now i get what i like. You should also consider a larger tank its easier to do it right the first time than have to upgrade later.240g 8x2x2 min

I would go with silver dollars, and clown loaches as tankmates. You should try some dats! I dont think datnoids are south american tho.

Loaches are not SA, go with some discus.
