Hello,
My boyfriend and I are experienced Arowana keepers, we have a 25" silver and a 10" jardini. He works at our LCF and they got an order of baby black arowanas. The babies were much smaller than they expected.
It's about 2.5 inches and still has a small egg sac. I know that it's not recommended to get them like this, due to their sensitivity. I'm also not happy about the fact that it was most likely taken from its dad's mouth too early. However, we figured it wouldn't stand much of a change staying at the fish store. I wanted to rescue it. Not to mention the fact that I've wanted a black arowana and this was a great deal.
So we've had him for about 2 weeks now, and his egg sac is almost gone. He's doing great and is very active. We have a few small discus in that tank. For the past day or two the arowana has been trying to eat their food, and has succeeded.
We've never had a fish this young or with an egg sac. I have heard things about fish having digestive problems if they eat before their egg sac is gone. Is this the case with baby arowanas? This is something I haven't found an answer to in my research. Should we make more of an effort to stop him from eating until his egg sac is gone? The sac itself is about 2mm wide, it shouldn't be there for much longer right?
Thanks.
Kyra
