Hi guys,

I recently got a baby black arowana whoch had a very nice black and yellow contrast with the black being dark and yellow being bright. Unfortunately it got eaten up by my albino senegal and i was really upset because i didnt expect that to happen (my silver ar grew there the same size till it's bigger now without any issue). I went to buy another baby black arowana (it's not in that tank now) and realise the colouration isnt as nice as my first black arowana. It isnt as dark in terms of blackness (a little greyish instead) and the yellow isnt so bright. Does anyone know why? Both black arowanas were purchased at the same size. Is the second aro of lower quality? Thanks

Dominance will also play a role in how bright/crisp the colors are. For example of my three baby blacks my most dominant fish is jet black and has some bright orange on its tail. What little yellow is left is bright yellow. My submissive two are dark black around the edges and have less bright orange and even less bright bits of yellow. They are 4-5" right now. The orange is starting to come in around the edges were they have white when smaller.

Mine eat food sticks several times a day.

Color at that age and size is a stress indicator. Their colors will fade rapidly if you or the lfs did not house them properly. Remember, almost all baby black are from wild caught (Peru, SA), and the water there is very different. Some babies may adjust properly to tap water while others may have a really hard time. It would help if you use some stress coat along with some almond leaves or blackwater extract.

Blackwater is not needed. I have raised many aros from egg sack in tap water and these blacks I have had some egg sack left when I got them. The stress factor does have something to do with it, but if they are eating then they are fine.
