I just saw a few at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago that where the size of a dinner plate along with some larger redhooks...FWIW:popcorn:

I'd like to have a few myself, good luck........

Heres apic of mine:

They do get bigger if treated right, they need to be in schools and will school with redhooks, they need a mixed diet including algae, they need soft to neutral water, and they neeed swimming room. In the Wild they can reach almost 17" but in even large tanks they tend to reach a bit smaller like 12-13".

AHHHHH How soft of water are you talking? I used to have severums and they always died. Water was perfect. all I could think of was my GH. It varies from 9 to 11. I don't have the time or money right now for a RO either.

Think these guys would be ok? I'm ordering them so if they are sensitive in that area then I will just need to choose another species that schools and fills up the top half of the tank.

I have one site that says black bars reach about 39 cm and red hooks 42 cm thats way, way over a foot but that is probably wild caught specimens. I have read they prefere slightly acid or soft water but also read they do just find in alkaline hard water.

pH should be 5-7, dH should be near 10, this is the general equivalant of the same gH. I mispoke when refering to soft water, I meant soft pH.
They will live at higher pH but don't do well and tend to stunt.

Thanks for the info everyone. I was gonna pull my hair when each site was telling me different stuff. I think I will get the Black Bars since I can get them small and for the same price as a red hook. Might have to bump them to my 210 eventually.

Bruce, is there anything I need to know about em?
Aggression, growth rate, character, etc?
