black beauty sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Black beauty is iron slag. It is very sharp since they make it for blasters. I would not use it for fish that sift through the substrate. It is very fine and not inert. I know people do use it in aquariums, those are just some of it's negative attributes.

I used it for years in my Central American cichlid aquariums. I did a few tests with it and couldn't tell that it altered the water chemistry in any way. I kept numerous species in with this sand including many f0 Amphilophus, Vieja, and Theraps. All of them did fine and most of them bred. It is sharp, but it didn't seem to irritate any of my fish, most of which dug through and sifted it constantly. I've been out of the hobby for a while and I don't know if the product has changed any in the last five years, but it could have. With all that said, I plan to use black sand in one of my new setups and I'll be going with something specifically sold for aquariums because peace of mind is worth a lot in my opinion.

If you do use black beauty, please don't order it from ebay. The $60 you pay for shipping is enough to buy 400 lbs of this sand from your local Tractor Supply or similar store. Additionally, I don't trust anyone with writing skills like that... and I quote, lol...

"IT MAKE YOU FISH LOOK GREAT IT A CLEAN LOOK NOT LIKE THE DIRTY LOOK WHEN YOU SEE A RED DEVIL PLECOSTOMUS OR ANY PLECOSTOMUS'S OR A FRESH WATER BLUE CRAB OR A ELECTRIC BLUE JACK DEMPSEY FISH."
