I want to pull the trigger soon on a black aro for my 450 I have active and established fish such as silver dollars and greater scissor tails. I don't want the aro out competed. How big does he need to be when introduced to be successful. The other fish are all five or six inches and very active feeders

Feed floating foods, just drop in enough that there's only enough for the others to grab make sure there's enough to go around and he'll be fine. Vary the diet too, I don't see why one wouldn't be fine.

When it comes to blacks, 6-12" at least if you want to put them with tankmates. Baby blacks are very sensitive
+1 especially since blacks are known for being the least outgoing/aggressive of aros.

I keep my black aro with ten peacock bass in a 450 tall. Despite being only a couple inches longer at about 14" it has never been shy about getting food. It's always right in the middle of the action at feeding time.

Thanks for the feedback, it sounds like if I can find a pellet trained one in the 8-10" range I should be fine

Ya silvers are also quite timid but the new comer should always be better off in size and accustomed to eating habits to survive
