I have a 2in male Black Common Oscar and i was wondering if it would be best to get a female now to breed later or keep them in separate tanks and introduce them later to breed or what to do. also this might be a stupid question but I'm just curious will a tiger or any other Oscar mate with a different type of other Oscar.

thanks in advance

I knows this works with guppies and convicts, not sure about other fish...

When you keep a male with a female, the males releases breeding hormones into the water. This causes the female to mature faster. All that energy that could have gone to extra growth and development gets partially diverted to prepare her for breeding. If you want your oscars to develop to the fullest, i would let them reach their growth peak first before breeding.

Oscars generally reach 10-12" in thier first year of life. Most are sexually mature at 9-11 months. You cannot sex oscars, they are immaterial. The best way to breed oscars is to raise 6 in a large tank, wait for 2 oiscars to pair off, and remove/sell the rest.

black, red, tiger, albino, super red, lemon, gold, etc etc are all different color variations of the same fish.

Mystix is right It is extreamly had to sex an oscar!

Or get a pond, and get 16 and a half oscars... Why half you say? I honestly don't know.

like its been said, they breed with any variety of oscar, and sexing is pretty much impossible untill you see them pairing off.
Reguardless, good luck raising your O, thier a cool fish.

So I could put 16 oscars in my friends 200G pond? I think things would pan out nicely.

sexing them involves netting and prodding, bad, bad news for them.

Get a few and let them pick who they like. Do you want to be in a small box and have someone forced upon you to breed with?:screwy::screwy:
