I have bred convicts for a long time, and for the first time, Ive sold the parents, and kept some babies as breeding stock.

So, i put 4 black convicts in my 55 gal, and i figured chances, 50 50 female - 50 50 male. OK well i think i have either 3 females 1 male or 4 females...

Because the one i think is male, has ALL the characteristics of a male, Long pointy fins, hes got a elongated body, hes more aggressive then the others.

But there is one thing. He has orange all over his side, just like a female... I see he/she with another female, hiding in the cave protecting it, but isn't it REALLY rare for males to have that type of coloration?

i have seen hundreds of cons, and not once have i seen a male with orange covering his belly. on the other hand, ive seen multiple female with male characteristics, like bulky body, amazing fins, and heavy aggression. i'd say you got 4 females, but its better that way because you wont be inbreeding.

Its not better that way, because i was trying to find a breeding pair :s:cry:

Wow, New news..

I just went to go look at him and the two were laying/fertilizing the eggs. o.O

I guess they answered my question for me.

Chances are, its still a female. If both convicts have orange, then they are females. Unless you happen to be very very very lucky to have a super super super rare male convict that physically looks like a female with the orange spot, but is a male.

Female convicts may tend to breed with each other, hence practicing same sex mating. I have had this happen a few times and I have seen it happen at the pet stores.

CJ exotics used to have a breeding project that involved a pink male with an orange belly. This was the only case that i have seen that involved a pink male convict with an orange belly. They never showed any proof of fry though.

if the fry do hatch, please do post pics and video them. It would be awesome!

Goodluck!

dude did u just sell a great pair and u are using their fry to breed thats inbreeding and chances are you will get bad fry with health issues

Here is my chubky female can with long extensions that breeds with my female Centrarchus all the time.
