I currently have a tiger oscar, rainbow shark, and clown loach. They are all still small. The oscar is at most 3 inches. I know alot depends on the actual fish and tank size, but if i had a big enough tank, could i get a black convict? I've heard there good tank mates for oscars, but am worried about the rainbow shark and clown loach.

Indeed you could; how large is the tank? Also, clown loaches like being together. Make sure the loach and the shark get enough to eat later on, because oscars are voracious feeders.

Also, welcome to MFK

the oscar is going to need a large tank, 125 or 150g, but they would be fine to keep together

yeah welcome to MFK!! whereabouts in NC are you? and yeah if the tank is big enough then a convict should be fine, and like already stated clown loaches really shouldnt be kept alone, i think a 120g (5ft would be better dimensions if you can find one) would be good and then you could get a couple more loaches, and i dont know anything about rainbow sharks but if they school and stay fairly small then you should get a couple more of them as well

I live in Raleigh North Carolina. Right now my oscars only 3 inches long, the shark and loach are about 2 inches. I know loaces like to school, but he seems to like the shark alot. And rainbow sharks are meant to be kept solo. Right now i have a 55 gallon, but i'm moving in 4 months, and have a 150 gallon going in my new place. I'm looking for something that will get along with all my fish, i like the black convict as well as the firemouth cichlid.

well if you have that large of a tank waiting than you'll be fine.you could even get a breeding pair of convicts

+1 though i wouldnt get the pair until you put them in the bigger tank as the cons will probably start breeding before you move, you could go ahead and get one though, just remember in 4mnths your O should be 4in bigger si just keep that in mind these guys grow quick, and thats cool your in raleigh you ever go to the fish store up there where the member adhlc works. cant remember the name of the place but its pretty cool and they have some different cichlids that other places dont carry

I havent at all, I'm relatively new to this hobby, I got into it about a month ago, and just fell in love. I've been scuba certified for awhile, and just love that i can see fish all the time now. Just watching them swim around really relaxes me. I love it!!!!

yeah its a great hobby, usually people start out with tanks about the size of yours but then quickly get a bigger one when they realize how few of these big brutes can actually fit in there lol, iv been keeping fish for a couple years now and was thinking about going saltwater for something new but then started researching centrals and south americans and saw how many different kinds were actually out there and have just gotten back into keeping these guys seriously :) and its really the first time iv actually done research and am keeping them correctly (never over crowded, but didnt know about the importance of regular water changes till i started researching on here and saw the growth differences)
