My black crappie looks terrible. He has shredded fins and has white scratch markings on him (it looks different from the design) and has it on his lip. The only thing I could think of is that the smb was mean to it. I have a spare 20 gallon, the only problem is I would have to set it up. my current 20 gallon has minnows and other small fish I worry about, even though the black crappie is 2.5-3in. What can I do other than give them away since my LFS usually do not take natives since they are "not wanted".

I thought this was the stocklist you were going to go with?

150-200gallon
3 bluegills
1 black crappie
1 war-mouth ( or in 55)
1 Florida brown bullhead
1 white crappie
1 Sacramento perch.

55 gallon

2 or 3 black madtoms
1 pirate perch
3 creek chubs
1 Longear
1 tire track eel.
1 Lake chub-sucker

the Bluegills/Crappie would have been fine in a 150-200g tank.....a Black bass like Smallies, spotted, or largemouth will get mean in that size of a tank and eat, kill or Harass the stocklist you have above.

I'm not allowed to use my 45, so my stock list is

180gallon:
1-3 black crappie
1 smb
3 bluegills
1 florida brown bullhead
1 lake chubsucker
1 warmouth

my 1st 20 gallon
5-11 fathead minnows
4 red shiners
1 goby of some sort
1 eastern mudminnow (soon in other 20)
1 mottled sculpin (i got recently and is doing great so far)

second 20 (florida swamp biotope)
4 bluespotted sunfish
1-3 pirate perch
1 eastern mudminnow

I think that is everything. The smb is only mean to the black crappie and warmouth. He is nice to the others.

Biggest mistake is get SMB in first place....they are meanest SOB.

what if I raise the crappie in a 20 gallon then reintroduce it back in later when it has grown? It will probably not work though

The problem won't go away till you got rid of SMB or got rid all of his tankmates. It's only one cure.

How many different people have to tell you to get rid of the bass before it will sink in? You've got two threads on two different forums and almost every response is telling you the bass is the problem... I hate to beat a dead horse man but ditch the bass and your crappie and warmouth will be fine.

I know I have many peoble tellimg me what to do, it's just that it is not easy to get rid of and I need to figure out a way to get rid of it. Also I will not kill it...

The kill option may be your only option.

They (the bass and the crappie) seem to be doing better. I've read that more structures make bass more aggressive, is this true? If not, I can propagate my 3ft hornwort plant into smaller plants for more hiding spots. Also the crappie only has shredded fins that are recovering, no scratches.
