So i just got some black crappie's and i want to add them in my tropical tank. My question is, what is their lethal temperature? Tried to do some research but none of the information was useful, so why not ask the experts i thought.
.......... I was gonna try 82 since i had a couple of Lmb before living in a 84, but they died after a week. Would you think it would be impossible? I figured since they are in the same family as the tilapia/sunfish, they would have a more flexible temperament. I do have some bluegills and sunfish currently housed in another 40 gal 82-84 degrees. Hopefully i wont go to hell if i test experiment some bait, since we caught them netting for schad.
The crappie will die for the same reason the lmb probably did. They can handle temps that high for short periods, but they aren't made to live in it. The bluegills and sunfish should also be kept at a cooler temp for the same reason. Temps over the high 70's just arent good for most north american fish for long periods of time.
I completely agree, plus, you should not mix tropicals and temperate fish, for temperature reasons, disease issues, diet and aggression. Most natives are far more agressive than most tropicals, at least the ones we would be discussing here on MFK!
I would have to say crappie and rockbass are the two species of sunfish that need cold water. Adult crappies are know to suspended at there prefered temps in deep lakes during the hot of summer.
aww crap, i was going to attempt the same thing . Oh well ill just set up my 40 gal for a natives tank, and besides my rtg will eventually grow to eat them. BUT OMG they would look so nice in my black on black tank along with my polleni & aros !
Crappie tolerate temps up to 90F for short durations (That's how warm the lake I live on rose in the shallows where crappie were nesting). We didn't record any fish kills from the heatwave but, these lake fish don't normally encounter such extreme temps throughout the year. Normally, the lake water remains in the 69-76F range through most of the year with some summer spikes and dips to the 40s in the winter.
Dam hate to double post but would you think its possible to permanently housed them at 80-82? your words are more wise then Einstein on brain steroids!
