One of my lfs has a Datnoid ,not sure what kind, and I'm not sure if it's worth buying or not. It's about 6" in length. The problem I'm having with it is that it's very black in coloration. You can see the stripes but the (normally) orange part is very very dark. It's in a 100 gallon tank with a bunch of fast swimming African cichlids.

My question is is the Dat going to color up if he goes into a non-stressful tank? If it's going to stay all black permanantly, I don't want it. The people at the lfs didn't even know what kind of fish it is or how much to charge. I offered them $20.00 and she came back and said the boss wants $50.00 minimum so I walked.

Should I get it or not???

try to get a picture of it but $50 for a 6" dat is a pretty good deal.

But it's not very attractive. It has a nice shape but like I said it's all black. Is it just stressed out or will it continue to be black forever. Sorry to sound like a noob but I am when it comes to Dats.

I've seen one that was solid black turn perfectly stable when it was comfortable. The africans are probably stressing it out.

I would take the chance and get it.

Its kind of gamble. You won't really know untill you take him home and put him in your own tank. Offer them $40 for it, if hes been there awhile they will take your offer.

ask the LFS guy to net it and hold it. some dats will lighten up in that situation. not all but some will. it has worked for me to see the strips better.

its also true that it may be unstable in one tank but moved to another can become stable and vice versa.
