Amphilophus sagittae that is the scientific name for the black devil i have been wanted a black devil female for my RD male and i was wondering if anybody has these or have had them and if you have some pictures i would love to see them

also i have been wanting to make a ruff @$$ tank so with a BD and a RD can you have a black nasty.

so here are my questions
size
compatibility
rareity, how often have YOU seen them
and are they glass bangers like the RD

or i think the fish i also may thnk is a Black devil is amphilophus zaliosus

So you are willingly trying to help make a mess of the Amphilophus complex?

Good man, Hybrids are cool....

Hybrids are not only cool but they occur naturally in the wild for many animal species that are closely related. I think youmean zaliosus because as far as i've seen Saggitae are usually white..

hybrids are cool but to be completely honest when it comes to fry i cull them off so fast almost mercilessly, krib fry get fed to my tangs, convict fry get fed to everything, these fry also will get fed to everything else.
i like seeing them get raised but when it comes to growing out a hybrid or even any fish i dont have the patience so they just become food thus not messing up our already so hybridized Amphilophus species even more lol maby one if i can get half orange half black from a hybrid then yea he will live but other than that it wont go to a lfs for sure.

and yes you r right
strato i do mean zaliosus

the thing about hybrids is, they are said to be destroying the hobby etc because people release them to an LFS and people unwillingly buy them and might use them for breeding which would mess up the blood line. if you sell a hybrid as a hybrid, and you don't market it as something different than there is nothing wrong that youre doing, I would happily buy hybrids, especially if i knew exactly what they were.

In theory that is correct but not everybody does that. Plus CA cichlids have HUGE spawns and sometimes there sin't a market for a bunch of hybrid fish so they have to go somewhere. And just because you are a responsible hybird fish breeder does not mean everyone else is. Hybrids do have a place in the hobby and have for a long time so i am not going to bash hybrids. But they are not for me personally. I think a good reason why you should not cross them is the amphilophus complex is hard enough to distinguish as it is. We really don't need any more confusion.

As for info Saggate are not all white. The y come in barred and colored variety. They look very similar to citrinellum and labiatum. The difference is they are more elongated and are built for the open water. In the wild they retreat to deep water when threatened as opposed to someting like citrinellum which will retreat to caves and what not. I have never kept them but base on what I have read they are pretty nasty fish. maybe even nastier than citrinellum. I have read they top out at 10-12"

Zaliosum are open water fish as well but get larger and I have only seen barred specimens. Think 12-14". I know very little about them because people rarely keep them but I imagine they are not much more complicated to keep than any other amphilopus. As far as keeping them with a black nasty and RD... That's a lot of heavy hitters in one tank you would need something quite large to keep them in. What tank size are we talking. Your chances of finding a zaliosum are very slim I rarely see them for sale.

Sorry but this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Fish (hybrids) are NOT distributed properly, you know that, I know that and everyone else knows that. Hey that looks like a devil, "oh it is, and it has some unique colors" cool I will buy it and breed it with my Midas. Oh wait, the guy thinks its a Devil because nobody cares, and nobody pays attention to what is in the fish. Now we have a serious hybrid issue and the breeder thinks that they are all Devils. HELLO?

As for the black devil, its actually known as the arrow cichlid, not black devil. It is a Zaliosis, not a Labiatus.
