I decided to give black diamond media (medium grain) a try as it came recommended for a darker substrate to bring out the colors in fish more. I was also trying it due to a friend suggesting that the Aquaquartz PFS that I bought off of a specific Amazon vendor also caused flashing with his fish, that was never cured.
Anyways, I transferred the Black Media sand to 50% of the tank as a trial run. Unfortunately, within 24 hours I already noticed a large gash out of the side of a clown loach. I understand I was already dealing with some minor flashing to begin with but it should also be noted that this substrate media is abrasive enough to definitely do damage to fish. Just thought I would share my findings. I’ll probably switch to HTH PFS next as opposed to dropping $350 for 9 or 10 bags of black Seachem substrate. Tank is a 125 gallon.
