I've seen a lot of people using this in their planted tanks, but wanted to ask a few questions about it before I go and get some to try out.

I'll quote the description of it from the Tractor Supply Co. website:

Black Diamond Granules are coal slag abrasives used as a blasting media to remove paint and rust from surfaces to produce a clean, ready for repaint finish. Black Diaond coal slag granules are very hard and angular in shape, making their cleaning speed and cutting ability very efficient and productive. Black Diamond coal slag also has very low free silica content(less than 2 percent).

Will this affect fish like cories, eels, eartheaters, and other fish that like to dig/burrow in the sand?

If I was wanting to use this as my main substrate, what can I expect? Is it thick and dense? Or is it 'fluffy' and easy to suck up in the siphon intake?

I normally prerinse all sands before I put them in the tank, but am curious how much dust these generally have that is released into the water column?

My main concern would be the eartheaters, aside from that I shouldn't have any fish in there that would sift the sand.

I use the 20/40 mix from tractor supply. My bichirs dig in it and my cichlids have no problems with it. Shouldn't be a problem no matter what fish.

Use it in my planted with cories with no problem. It's quite thick and dense as you say and does not get easily sucked into the filter inlet. You'll need to pre-rinse it like every sand or else it will give out that gray dust cloud but that will also go away. Best thing is it is really a beauty among substrates.

Nice!!! Thanks for the link. I guess I should check and see if my TSC has it in stock huh? Ha!!!

I thought about mixing it with some PFS, but wanted it to have a darker look, so perhaps I'll do 3:1 ratio of BD to PFS.
