black dust

every 3 days or so i start to see a cloud of black dust over sand in one of my tanks.... anyone have this problem....and i dont think its carbon....
 
can you describe it better? Dust?!
 
well did you recently change your carbon in your filter?

well i was out of town for two days....came back my brown sand almost looks black as i approach the tank i spook my fish a lil bit they thrash aroound for a sec and then i see the cloud start to move..looks like a black dust cloud that has setteled on the water column...i have a hob filter on the tank and i changed the cartridges about a month and a half ago..first time ive seen anything like it fish are fine....:confused:
 
I would still suspect the carbon. Maybe you got some cr@ppy stuff. First I would just vac out the dust when it settles, and then I would remove the cartriges and rinse and inspect. Maybe some of the granules just fell apart? I can't think of anything els ethat would cause something like this.

well it does have some kinda hob filter that ive never seen before i have to make the cartridges that i had fit in side of it so it could possibly be the problem
