I have a 5 inch green terror, a 5 inch gold severum and a 3.5 in firemouth that live in a fifty five with some dithers. They get along great and are getting to the point where i will work on an upgrade. My firemouth and gt have developed a black edge on their fins that has been there for a couple weeks. the severum shows no signs. What do you think it could be? Is it Harmful? I do weekly 25% water changes and it is filtered by an ac110. trying to get another filter. help please

thanks
Max

Please post water parameters and then photos of the black edges. Sounds like finrot to me.

Oscars are what I'm most familiar with. I know with them that black edges on their fins means healing and white edges is growth. Maybe it's coloring as they get older. But like Lupin said-post ammonia, nitrite & nitrate if you will to rule out anything else.

just did my weekly water change and notice a small amount of ammonia. I just got back from vacation so I bet my mom was overfeeding. Well i did a bigger water change and ammonia is gone with no nitrites and 10 nitrate. Would the ammonia spike be enough to cause finrot and what do I treat it with?

Ammonia spike indicates poor water conditions and therefore can cause finrot, yes. Only water changes can rectify that. No need to switch to antibiotics. Increase your water changes to 2-3 times a week with at least 30% of the water volume replaced. In this current scenario, I'd do 15% daily until the fins recover completely.
