It eats normally and is very active but why is it so dark? It was blue/green with a purple throat at the LFS.

I don't think he likes the company but I don't want a single fish in my display tank either so the only option would be to take him back to the LFS.

i would say he's stressed, but im no expert.. but still thts most likely it. give him a couple days to accommodate and see if his color changes back. what are his tank mates? tank size? water params?

120 gal, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 5 ppm nitrates, 76 F, ph 7.4

He changed color to black when I added a bigger fish to the tank (male australoheros sp. red ceibal)... before that he used to attack everything else but now he's not being aggressive. I think the bigger male made him change.

Here you can see them

5x clown loaches
3x Baby Salvini (female 1", males 2")
1 female Blue acara (4")
2x red ceibal
- 5x small chinese algae eater

I know I'm a little overstocked but I planted the tank and am currently growing a lot of pothos ivy with the roots submerged to help with the nitrates

in that picture the flowerhorn looks like he brightened up a bit in the stomach area. but as long as its behaving and not being agressive to everything in the tank than you should be fine, give him a couple days to adapt.

Your tank is 76degrees, a big no no for flowerhorns. At a minimum it should be at least 80. Bump up the temperature and you'll see what I mean.

^ not only it's gorgeous... they're a breeding pair, that's the reason I decreased the temp from 82 F to 76 F, and will soon be at 72 F. someone here told me they don't do too well in hot water

I think I'm gonna take the FH back to the LFS now, don't want him to be miserable but I'd rather keep the rest of the fish which do well with each other

You have a breeding pair? That's even better. Yep, keep those two as long as you can in your community. They are very attractive fish that don't grow to monstrous sizes. Very nice!
