I am looking to add substrate to my 180g tank. I was leaning towards a fine gravel but looks like most people with Black Diamond Blasting Sand. There are tons of threads on the pros/cons so I am not concerned about that. My biggest question is around the required grain size to prevent it from getting into the filters. My tank is a 180g with FX5 and AC110s. My fish are piranhas so they will not be interacting with the substrate much.

My biggest concern is I don't want sand getting into the filters and ruining them. This is a risk with both considering the design of both filters. There is a tractor supply store by me and they have both the fine grain and medium for the blasting sand.

Cost is a point ($30 vs $200) and at some point I might want to do light plants which the sand is better for, but ultimately I am fining with paymore more money if it is better for my aquarium.

Any suggestions on black gravel is also welcome. I dont want crap black gravel that will lose its coloring and peel.

I use the 20/40 (medium) grit Black Diamond from Tractor Supply. White bag with black lettering. Red lettering is finer grit. The intake of both HOBs on my 55 sit 4" above substrate and never had an issue. For $9.63 per 50lbs, you can't beat it IMO.

I use the 20/40 as well. Two FX5's with intakes 5 inches above. No issue with the sand getting into the filters

Use pre- filter sponges on all intakes as a fail - safe , it will save $ on impeller replacement
