i just bought a GT at petco the other day at the store he was really bright its tail looked almost yellow well when they guy caught him and but him into the bag his color got darker and now he's in my tank and is really dark i had my water tested and everything checked out ok he's eating and he's in there by himself would it be that my gravel is black and he's adjusting to it? or is he stressed out? is there anything i can do about it?

My red terror gets nearly solid black if he's really PO'd. So does my rainbow cichlid. I would figure the GT is the same.

How do you define fine water conditions? But he is most likely getting used to his new house.

I agree. Give him a week or 2 and his colors will be back to normal just like they were before he was netted and bagged. As far as gravel goes, Natural colored or anything dark is always good. Try to avoid bright colors if possible. Hell, I plan on getting a dark green when I move my RD/Midas into his new 90 gallon.

Water conditions to me are basically just 4 things.

Temp
Ph
Ammonia
Nitrite.

Those are the most important factors imo.

I agree with everybody else. He's pissed off and stressed out. give him at least a week. But that doesn't mean that he won't be a tint darker from the gravel. Been my experience that alot of fish will turn a few shades lighter or darker to help blend in with their envirnment.

thanks for all the info he swims around and eats. it's just his coloring that worried me. i had my water tested again at my lfs and this is what i got. so it should take about a week? the thing is i put in two different thermometers and i got two different readings the one i have in there all the time said it was 80 and the floating one i put in came to 77. i have my heater set at 75 should i lower it? i live in los angeles and it's been hot lately.

Temp is 77
Ph 7.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0

I think you should raise it to atleasdt 78. Personally I keep my tank at 80 all year round. I'm from the San Fernando Valley (still LA County) and it's much hotter in the Valley then downtown. What kind of heater do you use?

Even if you set it at 80, your heater has a thermostat so if it's hot outside, your heater is still going to keep the tank roughly at what you set it at. Also, all those Hagen Floating thermometers with suction cups can be off a degree or so, just not too much.

i got a pic of my gt could you guys tell me if it's a male or female. and about the heater i have to check to see what brand it is.
