Black Mangrove Riparium Package: Grow a Mangrove Forest in Your Tank

I have a few extra black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) propagules around here and I would like to make them available as near-complete kits with riparium planters.

Black mangrove is a fun plant. I keep several of them in ripariums, where they are easy to grow. I have only had experience growing them in freswater, but they should be adaptable to brackish conditions to a certain (??) level of salinitity. Here is a picture of my 50-gallon tank when I had a couple of the largest plants in there.

Black mangrove grows slowly. These little trees are now about 24" tall, but I have been growing them for a couple of years.

I think that riparium planters are the easiest way to manage them in an aquarium. This kit includes almost everything you will need to get a couple of planters going with black mangrove propagules...

Black mangrove is a "heavy root feeder", so it is a good idea to use ferts in the riparium planter cup. The mangrove propagules were all collected legally at a location in Florida.

I am asking for $29 for everything. I have before sold little established rooted mangrove trees for around seventeen bucks each before shipping, so this a good deal. You will just need to use some patience because they are slow-growing plants.

I can also provide additional tips for growing the black mangroves, but like I said they are pretty easy plants. I have enough extra propagules here for just two ro three of these kits, so send a PM soon if you are interested.
 
Just curious on how slow they really grow? In a years time would you have much vertical growth or do they focus on getting the root established? I am very interested in trying these out. I have grown mangroves in my saltwater sump but would love to try some in fresh.
 
I'd say that in a year if you keep pretty bight light on them and good root fertilization they'll grow to about 18" tall. I have noticed that they shoot up right away to about 10" with just the reserves in the propagule, and then grow more slowly than that.

I understand that black mangrove can handle pretty salty brackish conditions, but it won't grow so well in full-strength seawater the way that red mangrove can.

There is just one or two more of these kits left. The purchases that I have gotten so far will ship out Monday.
 
I just shipped out all of the pending plants and other things that I had and then found that I have enough of these propagules for one more of these kits. Send me a PM if you might be interested.

They root fast. This one was potted up only a few weeks ago.

To plant the propagules you just bury the end with the root about 1/2-way down in the substrate. The pointy end of of the propagule should be sticking up in the air.

I put three propagules in this one, but I will snip one of them off later on because it will be too crowded. I think that two propagules per planter is a good number.
