Mods feel free to move this for me if you think it would be in a more active forum. But this is in my jardini tank.

okay tank size is 125.
I just did a WC 25% (I do it once week)
ammonia is normal about .1 ppm (my faucet water is the same)
nitrates were sky high but i think it was because I had prime. Well it was actually.

okay well i really figured it out so you guys don't really need to analyze the data. I removed my african roots after noticing mold on them. I didn't know at first. I first smelled my tank to make sure it smelled right, which it did not.

The smell of my tank smelled like old washed laundry that didn't properly dry. that bacteria is exactly what my water smelled like. The smell is gone after 2-3 hours from the removal of my african roots i got a week or two ago.

So now that I narrowed down the problem I have my roots just sitting on my deck.

I've come to a fork where I can decide where to go from here and even do everything at once possibly.

What I for sure will start doing is cleaning the wood all the time. But, when I think about it, it really wouldn't help unless I used an anti-fungal product on my wood. maybe let it soak in...

I wonder if pimafix works and would keep it at bay.

I know we don't recommended using anything that we don't have to in our tanks. But I really feel as if this is a must. And I really want my african roots in there. its natural for mold to be in a lake but this is a tank guys(for those of u thinking that). If it weren't for my 55 gal sump with scrubbies my fish would be showing terror signs because he'd be almost drugged up from the mold that could be poisoning him. I've seen it before.

I don't have pictures. But the mold was greyish black and hairy. the hairs were about 2-3 mm and were patches on the wood. It was nasty. The smell was nasty. I thought it was the sand I added a week ago but no.

Has anyone dealt with this, or can anybody help me at all?

I'm thinking I might have to contact some mycologist or something. It'd be nice if I could id this unfriendly mold.

I might just try like a pima-fix soak after I boil the wood I am using.
