None of your business!
I have bought a small black nasty cichlid(N.Haitiensis), for my 90 gal..African cichlid tank..yes african cichlids..they are bigger.lol, and I was wondering if you kept these guy's how was it like and are they aggresive? I have researched these guy's and I didn't get that much info...I also got a 7 inch N.beani cichlid..for my 220 gal..Everything is fine in the 220 gal..but the 90 gal is a little fiesty, because my auratus cichlid is bullying them all, I hope the little black nasty will get tougher..Thanks

Id bet $100 that the black nasty (haitiensis) wont live 10 days in that tank. Chances are, it is already stressed and is in the beginning stages of the "oh to common" bloat. Haitiensis under about 5-7 inches are prone to it and, IME, if not raised alone or in a tank where they are the king, usually die from it within 10-14 days. I would move him pronto to a tank alone or in something with tetras or VERY mild mannered cichlids (if there is really such a thing).

The general consensus is that stress causes the bloat. Also, if your Beani is stressed at all, he might be in the same boat. They are prone to it just as much but you might have escaped it with him being bigger.

Good Luck and keep us updated. Search "Haitiensis bloat" and youll find all the info here you need. Just about everyone of us that has kept them in the past has lost one, if not many.

I will return both of them, tomorrow...I've heard these guy's can protect themselfs...to be honest with you, the beani is getting chased around by the smaller buttikoferi cichlid..man! What other cichlids do you think would work in my 220? Hopefully, I will get some bigger tank like 370 gal?

oh, they can and will once they get some size to them.

If you have a butti thats smaller than a 7 inch beani and is the dominant fish, you will more than likely have to go with something as aggressive or a lot larger than the butti.

I guess it matters what the tankmates are and if you have pairs etc. You could try a parachromis, but every jag, RTM & freddi under 8 inches ive had was docile and even then, none of them were fighters, just protected their territory. A dovii around 5-7 inches would usually work, but in the long run, the dovii is usually the only one left in the tank...usually, not always.

Again, it depends on the tankmates, but a trimac, dovii, male festae or m/f grammodes the same size or bigger than the butti would probably work. Buttis are brutal though...so another option would be to trade him for something a little less of a mass murderer. I personally like them though...even though they are african and arent naturally around the fish we all try and keep them with.

I already have a male Dovii, female jaguar cichlid,Festae male, and my butti. The beani is the last one. lol But, I nearly owned all the african's out there..and owned most of the big CA cichlids..I wan't something new? Any Idea's? Thanks..I've owned Green terrors, convicts, devils, midas, severums, dempseys, flowerhorns, trimacs, some pikes..and thats about it...

well, youre doing the same thing i would try in that situation, so nothing other than a/some big grammodes. Theres not much more out there, cichlidwise, that has the tenacity and attitude to hang with a dovii or aggressive butti unless you get something a lot bigger.

Maybe take a chance and give the beani a few days or check tomorrow and see if someone thats kept beanis at that size has some input. Ive personally never kept them and have stayed away from bloat prone fish because I dont have the time or ability to nurse them if they get it. Look at the past weeks posts and there was a member named robmcd (i believe) that just lost a few to bloat. There might be some good info from others or at least you can see who keeps them and ask them, they can help better than me since theyve had them.

you could always put a divider in the tank for a few days to let everyone get used to the presence of the beani. I dont believe that will make the beani un-stressed, but I honestly dont know.

Good Luck!
