In their native waters, water temps range in the mid 80sF to 90'F.
As they are the only cichlid endemic to the Hispaniola they don't appreciate any other cichlid tank mates.

Temp. at 85
Lots of airation
Lots of filtration
Lots of good clean water
I feed NLS There+A only

You're going to need a bigger tank if it's a male. They need astandard 125 as a minimum IMHO.

Past about 5", they're typically past their "bloat phase."

^^^^ this 100% except for the food. But like dubs said, once they're past 5" your usually in the clears but I say feed lightly for the first month then go ahead and put on regular feeding schedule. I feed mine anything they want once they reach 5":) in fact I have a mixed group of 20 growing out that ill post an update on this weekend:)

I agree with seedubs1.

I do a small water change every week sometimes twice a week (25% wc). I feed my grow outs nls flakes with garlic and hikari pellets. My breeding pair, I feed hikari and nls pellets, tilapia fillet and shrimp.
