I had some success with my earlier Trimac Tribute thread with many people posting unbelievable pictures of a very rare Cichlid for those not lucky enough to see them often. So I thought I would make a thread for another rare Cichlid, that I really like - the Black Nasty - Nandopsis Haitiensis. Males in particular are amazing and if you own one, show us all their immense beauty by posting some photos up. I have never seen an adult male in person, only on photos and in videos. I really cannot wait to see one someday.

Thanks

I hear of these guys dying oftyen from bloat and from being moved - it is strange how they seem to be so affected by things like that when most other species just get on with it. Both great males.

Hi guys:) I truly love Odos:) I have had plenty of bloat issues in the past and lost lots of odos. I bought a group of 16 in July from cichlidconnection. they were 3-3.5" very healthy. i put them all into a 125g as a species tank. they immediately established their own lil territories aprox 3" from eachother:) lol. 2 or 3 weeks went by and then they started showing signs of pairing. i had 4 males and 12 females lol. i lost one female to aggresion. i then sold a couple trios and kept the remaining males and females for my own pairs. I now have two bonded and bred pairs. the larger pair is male 5.5-6" aka. Capone, female is 4.75-5". my second pair is male 5-5.5" aka. Voodoo, female 4" aka. Vixen. Now they are imo extremely beautiful and healthy pairs. "Voodoo" is an all Black male..:) I thank Gage for the hook up. I have no bloat issues with any of this batch. What i did differently with these odos vs previous is, Oxygen. tons of oxygen along with my frequent water changes. my temps were maintained at 82-84 ph is 7 i do 30-40% wc every couple of days. i started feeding veggie flakes, nls pellets. after my males hit 4.5" they decided to eat massivore and hikari gold;)

I now have two batches of fry ready to go. Voodoo's fry are 1/2" and Capones are 1/4"+ here are some pics:) ill attach some videos in a second. alos have progression pics but their on a different computer so ill get those up when i can.

Thanks for the posts everyone - like the Trimac I think this cichlid is certainly underrated also. Maybe it is because of the difficulty in raising them. Anyone who successfully raises these guys to adult-hood in my opinion must be excellent keepers - I have heard from many people that their nasties died. Getting the right balance seems very hard.

I agree that they can be very stressful at times:) but very rewarding once you get right: )!!!

They're from same breeding colony. I've personally never seen a male that black. I believe the jet black is mostly breeding color. But outside of that he is still darker than anything I've seen before. The white male is exactly what I was looking for in an odo, the black male Just fell in my lap so to speak:) I've got some videos ill post of when I first got black male and I thought he was a she. Lol
