To add on to that, id suggest a tank with a 24" wide footprint, like a 120 would be really nice for him, they don't play well with others at all, and they are really, really prone to getting bloat, they like lots of Veggies as well.

mine refused to eat anything that's designated as veggie. mine seem to like new life spectrum, HBH soft krill pellets and meaty foods. this is open to debate so i'm just adding my two cents.

i think the key is clean water and a low stress environment. I don't do anything more special than add water conditioner during water changes. however i change around 40-50% of the water around once every 4-5 days. black nasties are very aggressive towards their own kind, and i think that attributes to the bloat you often times hear about. when stress goes up, their immune systems seem to drop like crazy.

This is a phone cam shot of my 8" female, I've had her a little over a year.
When I picked her up at the 2006 convention she was about 3" . I bought her with 5 others that didn't survive. 2 years before that, I bought 12 1" youngsters that also didn't survive. My feeling is the same as ewok, they aree prone to being stressed out by intra species aggression, in other words as sibblings vie for a place in the pecking order, and succomb to ailments brought on by that stress. There is a july 95 article in TFH mag by J Ferdenzi where, in my opinion, one secret of his success is due to keeping the 3 he had separated. Another article by Alf Stralsberg called Oh Island in the Sun, details natural habit, I especiall note the high temps they encounter in nature. My female eats worms, peas, HBH soft spirulina and krill and I keep the temp at least 80'F.
I have seen the large male @14"(I think) splash and drench any close passers by at the 2006 Chicago convention, amazing fish.

females max out much smaller than males, 11"ish and 16" for each. ph is nothing different than whats ussally used 6.8-7.6 or so. they are aggresive but very overated in aggresion as most fish are, i wouldn't keep them with anything though. if you google odo you should be able to find pics of cichlid scene large male no problem. i'd reccomend a 6x2' footprint for a pair. they are known to be erradic diggers.
