ok first post on this site! have a couple of questions. my brother in law gave me some black oak that he SAID was from a dead tree... however im thinking this is a tree that had fallen a few months ago in an ice storm we had. questions now..... first is black oak safe to use in an aquarium and second since this hasnt dried out and still has bark on it any input on how to speed up the curing process?

Welcome! You got me on that one. I don't have any idea on how to cure it faster. I don't know if it will be safe for the aquarium. Someone else will come along and help I'm sure.

I can't definatively tell you if that species or what you have is safe, nor could I confidently tell you about curing procedures. What I can tell you is that I picked up a piece of wood off of a small tree that looked like it fell over in a park nearby. Not sure what species but I think it was a small oak. I pretty much just took a saw and cut of the trunk and actual tree and took the thick root end. I just washed it off best I could, tied it to a piece of slate and dropped it in my 125. It's been in there for several months now and all my fish (CA cichlids) are doing fine. It gave off a bit of tannins and some loose bark fell off it in the begining, but the waters no longer stained. Good luck with it and let us know how you make out.

hard woods are fine to use. scrape off all bark. hope this helps.
