Two rays breed, one black one brown which color is dominant? Which is recessive? Talking about the base color

Lol get over that Justin this is a legit question. I'm sure there have been enough mutts produced on this site to get an idea on it. Did you guys see predominantly black base or brown base? Assuming both parents are pure and not mutts themselves

I would guess the male would have the biggest influence but its just a guess..black male..more black pups.brown male..more brown pups

Have you seen this to be the case? Genetics would say 50/50 without one parent being dominant. I personally have only bred brown brown and black black so no real world experience.

I'm sure more will chime in eventually. I want to say black is dominant just from what I have seen

There is no rule. It is not simple genetics (recessive/dominant) that one will be more dominant than the other and can be applied to all brown and black ray hybrids. The male being a black ray and female brown and vice versa will also have absolutely no impact on the outcome off the offspring. Some will look more like a black ray and some more like a brown ray (and even a 'perfect' blend), this is true even for siblings. I have found that the next generation of hybrids will be a little bit more predictable in how they will look. That is crossing a 50/50 pair that looks more motoro will generally produce more motoro looking pups (again a generalisation). The first cross between a pure black and brown is almost impossible to predict.

These are just my observations based on my own breeding and closely following the outcomes of other hybrid breeders in Australia.

Crossing brown rays is even harder to predict. I have seen 'pure' mantilla and pure motoro offspring coming out and looking pure motoro. Which is problematic as dishonest breeders can get rid of them as pure motoro when in fact they are hybrids.

It's not just dominant or recessive. There's incomplete dominance, codominance and overdominance. There's no way of knowing what you'll get under until you have the pups.

So what you guys are saying is its just like breeding pythons you have to find the dominant gene you want and breed the other traits in. I realize pythons to rays is like apples to oranges but same theory? I'm just asking
