I am thinking about replacing the gravel in my polypterus tanks with sand. What would they look better against: black or white sand. My tanks consit of palmas buettikoferi, ornatipinnis, endlicheri, lapradei, and weeksi. Thanks

The color of bichirs is partly affected by the color of substrate (or environment), the darker color of the substrate the darker color of the bichir will be (both base color and stripe color). Therefore, you might have few pcs of charcoal (bichirs) when using black gravel or sand, while you might have pale bichirs if you use white sand. How about grey? That's my favorite gravel for bichir.

having used white before it turns some nasty colors over time from age and algae i would use a dark beige or black
my white finally with some turning over and over has become a beige color but its still molted looking

I would say black, if not just becuase the white sand would reflect light upwards and then the bichir wouldn't have anywhere to to go to escape from the light... seeing as how they like it darker anyways...

if one of the factors for you is how the substrate color will affect your bichir color/pattern, white would not be good given the kinds of bichirs you have. i personally don't really like black either for the reason CDM mentioned. But if i have to choose between black and white, i'd go with black just because the bichirs will still look better imo than with white.
