I've never been much a piranha fan but I find myself reading about BP's a lot lately and kind of wanting one. What's the deal with them? They worth having? What size tank does a juvi need? How long do you have before they need a 75 gallon+?

I keep my juvy (2.5 inches) in a 29 gallon right now and putting my 8.5 inch in a 75g as soon as it is done cycling.

They are very slow growers so a small tank would work as a grow out for some time before needing a 75g and eventually 100+ for monsters, although it will be very rare for a fish to reach 12 inches + unless it was caught and imported at that size alreayd.

I have mine ~4" in a 55g, it'll last a while but I wish I had a 75g to start with since the footprint is better than 55g.

a year atleast

just a warning i have 3 rhoms at this time. only one isnt shy hes about 9 inch tho. the others ive had since june and they still hide ALL the time they were purchased at 4.5 inches and one is about 6 and a half and the other is five. just be prepared for a very shy fish. but i do perfer them over shoaling species hence my name. theres just something about those red eyes and that high back thatgivs me chills. a small 2 inch rhom may be fine in a 29 for a while but remember biger tank = faster growth..

i got into piranhas a few years ago.
let me tell you, they are over-rated.
if you're gonna get one cause you think they're bad ass, then you're wrong. not saying that you are though.
i first p's were a "purple" red spilo and a rhom, both at around 4".
they were very skittish when i got them and were for the the following six months or so. they wouldn't even eat in front of me for and would only eat when i am gone or the room is completely dark.
i got tired of it and then traded the spilo into a lfs for some red bellies cause i wanted something that would eat in front of me.
the red bellies were great, they were very active and skittish. but ate every shrimp i tossed in. i also thought they had more personality.
if you want a serra like a rhom, then i'd suggest you go to your lfs and pick one yourself that you like. i ordered mine online and i think that was one of my mistakes cause not all piranhas are going to have that fearless attitude.
if you do order one online though, you're gonna have to give it plenty of time to adjust and one day it'll come out of it's hole.

I know that they are actually very shy individuals. I'm okay with that.

And yeah... it's the dark color and that red eye... draws me in!

the big one is 14" he gone I sold him for $500 buck, know he is beat up bad does not look like the same rhom no more.
