Black rat snake

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
awesome, healthy looking specimen, definitely one of my favorites of all......I love ratsnakes, especially when they get BIG, like Boa constrictor-sized
I was happy that I got to it before it was run over. They are also one of my favorites. Awhile back I had one that was 6'. Impressive looking imo

quite a force at that size, huh? I remember I had some big ones, they'd wrap around your arm and if you let it go too long, you'd get "pins and needles" and your arm started to fall asleep

definitely powerful. I may hang onto this one and see how big I can get it.
Last I heard NJ was a bit strict on their ectotherm laws, you may want to make sure you can have it 1st and how. Here in PA we need a valid Fishing license and you can only own 1. Period. Daily limit is 1 and possession limit is 1. Better safe than sorry - you did a good thing saving it, I vote to keep it that way. Some of my friends in the reptile expos are from NJ and I hear them talking about all types of weird laws - like you can only own cornsnakes w/ red eyes.....no wild-type may be owned.

In not sure abou

Im not sure about all the laws but that is true about corn snakes, they are on the endangered species list for the state.

how often do you come across these frank? I've never seen one, I'd like to own a snake maybe one of these days. What are our laws on water snakes? I find them 24/7 fishing, always mean little cusses but I wouldn't mind having one in a pond around here as an "outside" pet. These rat snakes look awesome too though. Are they are arboreal or at least partially?

PA laws are all the same for Native Reptiles and Amphibians - as long as it's not listed in your Fishing Summary 201?(year) under protected, vulnerable, endangered, etc. and you have a valid fishing license, you may own 1......but just 1. You can find them on mountains w/ southern exposures if that helps at all, but that's also how you find Timber Rattlers so be careful. You can also find them on farmlands and foothills. They are climbers.....before they re-did the taxonomy and re-classed them all, I had every species in all-male colonies and all-female colonies and they loooooved their branches.

we only have timber rattlers in very very very limited areas here, I've personally never seen one, just know where they are supposedly seen frequently.

Are these snakes the same species that are referred to as black racers too?
