I choose not to feed my Henlei these pellets due to reports it can affect spot colour on black rays. However now Henlei are sold im getting some very young leos which will need to get growing up to about 6-7" fast. Therefore probably going back on pellet for a while but dont want their white spots to turn cream/ or even yellow ish.

Wondered what your thoughts are on pellet with only BLACK rays please?

never had any problems

my rays spots are pure white and they have been fed on pellets from birth

the spots on my leos that eat pellets are 3 colors cream yellow than white all in rings it actually looks way nicer like this i think.i dont think its just from pellets.they eat mostly shrimp and pellets and some scallops.

I have to say im not convinced that these pellets change the colour of the spots,i also feed lots of these Hikari pellets to my Rays including a small pair of Leos that have maintained very white spots throughout ......its possible it could dye the flesh and inturn discolour the white spotting but ive seen very little evidence so far to suggest this. For me the pluses of feeding this wonderful food outweighs any negatives,in any case if the spots did change to a cream colour then this would surely be reversed over the months if the owner of Rays ceased to feed this food.
Interesting subject, how many people have solid proof of this? it would be nice to see photographic evidence....before and after pictures!
The picture of the P14 looks black and white to me,for a ray that starts of its life as a brown ray it looks pretty good to me.

the pellets will only change an area of a fish to a different color if there is pigment in that area capable of turning that color. if the pellets did turn the white a beige color then it was meant to happen. shrimp contains astaxanthin and castathanxin... so feeding shrimp would turn the fish the same color as the pellets would. feed the pellets. they are the best food and will grow your fish with the best color and form!

I have 2 leos in the same pond one eats pellets and one eats shrimps both are the same coloring. I think lighting, substrate color and stress are the biggest things changing a rays color.

Interesting!...i feel this thread is starting to answer a few questions Jake......the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say.
